Arisun, Sydney CBD

For our first MSG outing since Christmas, we decided to meet up at Arisun in Haymarket, which brought back happy memories from our last dinner at the same restaurant.

Outside of Restaurant

Arisun hasn't changed a single bit since we last came to sample their infamous Korean fried chicken several years ago. Complete with indoor and outdoor seating, the restaurant provides a dim drinking/eating environment suitable for talking the night away whilst drinking beer and snacking on Korean fare, although cut short by their 2 hour limit for all tables.

Being here, you cannot go past their fried chicken:

Menu
(did someone say chicken!?)

Hence we decided to order two servings of fried chicken, as well as several other dishes, to share.

Original Fried Chicken ($33)

At Arisun, you can opt for either the boned or boneless chicken but based on past experience, it's better to get the boned chicken - whilst it is more fiddly to eat, the bone helps keep the chicken more moist. The original fried chicken is coated in a thin batter and deep fried to give it its golden brown, crunchy exterior but it doesn't take away from the natural chicken flavour.

Soy Fried Chicken ($33)

Although you'd think this dish would require more time to prepare (i.e. smother the fried chicken sauce), it actually came out well before the original fried chicken. Anyway, the soy chicken received the all-round tick of approval from the group - it had the same crunchy exterior and juicy chicken as the original flavour but made better with the thick, sweet soy sauce.

Seafood Pancake ($20)

A classic Korean dish, their seafood pancake was filled with ample seafood marina and shallots but lacked the usual crispy pancake exterior.

Black Bean Noodles ($12)

The picture is rather deceptive as whilst the bowl was big, the serving size was actually rather small. However, looks and taste-wise, it was spot-on in showcasing a quintessential vegetarian jjajangmyeon - sliced mushroom cooked in black bean (chunjang) sauce and poured on top of thick noodles.

Chilli Fish Cake and Rice Cake Hot Pot With Ramen ($35)

Filled with the tteokbokki, fish cakes, vegetables and ramen, this hot pot is certainly not for those that can't stand a spicy hit, but it is soooo good to eat and share on a balmy night under the stars.

Overall, the meal was satisfying and fulfilled any fried chicken craving we had. As we were seated outdoors this time round, there was significantly more lighting and less ambient noise (although just as rowdy), which is a better environment for getting ample fresh air (unless someone decides to smoke around the area) or catching up with friends.

After dinner, we decided to burn off some extra calories and took a long stroll to Movenpick in Pyrmont for dessert. We ended up getting 4 double-scoop ice cream cones (BOGOF with our Entertainment Book vouchers) and split the ice cream (i.e. one scoop each) - it was meant to be!
